This month we'll be joined by Coline and Paul, who have been exchange students this year and wanted to make the most out of their stay here before going home.

They joined as interns last year, and both decided to stay for their master's projects. And now they're already fledging... Congratulations to Tomas and Kristine who both presented their MSc theses today! Thanks for joining the adventure and good luck on your job applications!

PhD student Lex Folk gave his first talk at an international conference today, as the team is attending the 8th Evolutionary Demography conference. And what better venue than the Museum d'Histoire Naturelle in Paris!

 

Latest additions to the team, interns Tomas and Kristine, will take BIO299 (research practice in biology) with us this semester. A pleasure to see them discover the fantastic world of empirical parasite research! Here, Kristine scanning tags on salmon lice (with PhD student Lex Folk) and Tomas learning to sample and identify age and sex on salmon lice (with researcher Mathias Ugelvik).

Marie Hauso, future high school teacher (lektor), obtained her MSc degree today, with her usual brilliant enthusiasm and even a brilliant salmon louse cake to celebrate!

Today I've welcome 12-th grade biology students from Nordahl Grieg high school (videregående skole) in our lab. They could see live salmon lice, both on and off fish (yes, they actually swim pretty well!) and observe larvae. They also learned a little about our experimental design and how addressing research questions looks like in practice.

One year ago we tagged the first adult salmon lice from the first generation, starting our evolutionary experiment.

365 days, 50 sampling sessions, 612 tags set on adult female lice, scanned a total of 4176 times, and over 1.2 million larvae hatched later, we are proud to say that we have reached generation five.

Fantastic teamwork, I am very proud of what we have achieved in 2021 despite the challenges. One more year to go towards our 10-generation goal !

This week we have a guest from Oslo on visit. Espen Werner is here to sample metabolites and microbial communities from the slime of our fish hosts. He is a master student from UiO, supervised by Alexander Eiler. He will be back here for a second sampling session in a few months. Hope you enjoyed your time in Bergen, Even, and looking forward to your next visit!
